Finally … some glam and bling!

I’ve gotten two interesting promo pieces in the past week, both of which play on the hot consumer buzzwords “glam” and “bling.” And what’s most interesting is that one is from a breeder, one is from a plug producer, and they’re both aimed at growers.

The first is super-impressive catalog in the guise of a fashion magazine from Takao Nursery called Fleur, the magazine about plant fashion. Twenty-something Lisa Takao is responsible for this wonderfully trendy marketing piece aimed at their plug customers. Can you believe that the cover features a Coach purse? And inside is an article on “Generation Why,” another article profiling a young home-owning couple, and cool photo essays showing flowers paired with jewelry and makeup to illustrate how fashionable flowers can be. There are even Takao ads that are take-offs on real ads from The Gap and Absolut vodka.

The second piece is from Ball Seed, promoting their “Ball Bling” line of “color and sparkle,” which is a much trendier way to say paint and glitter for poinsettias, mums and other plants.

Yes, gardening is a traditional pastime. But it’s fun to see companies pushing our industry into the realm of fashion and design.

See you next time,
Chris
